Background of the study
Academic integrity is a cornerstone of quality education, ensuring that students produce original work and avoid dishonest practices such as plagiarism. Plagiarism, the act of using someone else’s work without proper acknowledgment, undermines the educational process and the credibility of academic institutions. In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI)-powered plagiarism checkers have become crucial tools in maintaining academic integrity across educational institutions (Tarkhanyan & McNamara, 2024). These tools use sophisticated algorithms to detect instances of plagiarism in students' work by comparing text against extensive databases of published content, academic papers, and online sources.

In Lafia, Nasarawa State, secondary schools are increasingly adopting digital tools to combat plagiarism, particularly in the wake of the growing use of the internet for research and assignments. AI-powered plagiarism checkers, such as Turnitin and Grammarly, provide teachers with a reliable means to detect and prevent academic dishonesty. However, the effectiveness of these tools in promoting academic integrity is influenced by factors such as teacher awareness, technological infrastructure, and student understanding of plagiarism. This study will explore the role of AI-powered plagiarism checkers in ensuring academic integrity in secondary schools in Lafia, examining both the benefits and challenges of their use.

Statement of the problem
Despite the availability of AI-powered plagiarism checkers, secondary schools in Lafia, Nasarawa State, may face challenges in fully utilizing these tools to uphold academic integrity. Issues such as limited access to digital resources, lack of training for teachers, and students' limited understanding of plagiarism may hinder the effectiveness of these systems. This study seeks to analyze the role of AI-powered plagiarism checkers in promoting academic integrity and identify the barriers that prevent their successful implementation in Lafia’s secondary schools.

  1. To assess the role of AI-powered plagiarism checkers in maintaining academic integrity in secondary schools in Lafia.

  2. To identify the challenges faced by teachers and students in using AI-powered plagiarism checkers in Lafia’s secondary schools.

  3. To evaluate the impact of AI-powered plagiarism checkers on students' understanding of academic integrity and ethical research practices.

Research questions

  1. How effective are AI-powered plagiarism checkers in promoting academic integrity in secondary schools in Lafia?

  2. What challenges do teachers and students face in using AI-powered plagiarism checkers in Lafia’s secondary schools?

  3. How do AI-powered plagiarism checkers influence students' understanding of plagiarism and academic integrity?

Significance of the study
This study will provide critical insights into the effectiveness of AI-powered plagiarism checkers in upholding academic integrity in secondary schools. By identifying the challenges and benefits, the study will help educators and policymakers improve the integration of plagiarism detection tools into the educational system, thereby fostering a culture of honesty and ethical research practices.

Scope and limitations of the study
The study is limited to secondary schools in Lafia Local Government Area, Nasarawa State, and focuses on the use of AI-powered plagiarism checkers. It does not include schools outside Lafia or other forms of academic integrity tools.
